The winds’ house
About the process
"Sissel Tolaas’ ‘Vindenes Hus’ near the Helgeland Bridge on the Rv17 in Alstahaug. The sculpture stands 5 metres high, is made out of concrete, and features 12 propellers. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration and the Sandnessjøen branch of Sparebanken Nord-Norge have contributed financially.Sissel Tolaas begins her project description of the sculpture as follows: "Geographically I have taken as a starting point the area of Alstahaug that is most exposed to the elements. Because the natural environment here is particularly extreme, artistically I have taken as a point of departure the idea/wish to preserve these natural forces in a hermetic unit; either as a classic sculpture integrated into the landscape or as an element that uses/functions in, and is used by, the surroundings.” [...]Sissel Tolaas' work can be characterised as a continual process of formulating new questions that can be expressed through art. Her more recent works have often had links to the process of nature. She expresses this process artistically using various types of material. The wind is harnessed by propellers, as in the sculpture in Alstahaug, or chemical processes are actuated, as in another piece she recently exhibited in Berlin. It becomes a discussion between nature, fundamental scientific processes and art’s attempt to communicate and express beauty."
